Okemos is an unincorporated community in Meridian Charter Township, Ingham County Michigan and has gained popularity recently with award winning schools & ease to Interstate 96 as well as MSU campus & downtown. With new businesses sprouting up in this bedroom community of Lansing, Okemos offers the backdrop of a wooded oasis away from the city grind . The community is 8 miles east of Lansing and 4 miles east of East Lansing. Okemos was originally a farming community, but has grown into a Lansing suburb.
Okemos is primarily home to residential development. Many of the Okemos communities include: Briarwood, Indian Lakes, Riverwood, Spring Lakes, Central Park, College Fields, Sanctuary, The Shoals, The Meadows, Champion Woods, Okemos Preserve, Heartwood and Hidden Valley. Retail establishments are sprinkled throughout the community, most notably the Meridian Mall. It is also home to the Meridian Historical Village located in Central park. The Village is home to many historic buildings that have been relocated from other locations and restored to their original style. Many community events are held at the Village throughout the year.
Okemos Public Schools offer exemplary educational programs. The district has a very active community education program which delivers a multitude of enrichment, youth sports and senior citizen activities to community members. Some 94% of last year's high school graduates went on to colleges and universities.
